Call the Fire Marshal -- It's Comic-Con!

Words by Jennifer de Guzman Belew
Pictures by JdGB and Brian Belew (and one by Bob)
The good folks at Comic-Con International estimate that more than 60,000 people attended the 2002 San Diego Comic-Con. From the miasma that I caught from the SLG booth, which was in the middle of the floor, I believe them. There was a lot of flesh at that convention, and not flesh in a good way.

Wednesday, July 31: Preview Night

Rikki and Tavi
After dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory, Jamaica Dyer, my husband Brian, and I arrived at the SLG booth somewhat ready to work.

Many creators were at the booth, including David Hahn (Private Beach), Serena Valentino (writer – GloomCookie, Nightmares and Fairy Tales), FSc (artist – Nightmares and Fairy Tales), Rikki Simons and Tavisha Wolfgarth Simons (Ranklechick and His Three Legged Cat - that's them in the picture, which taken on Saturday, but you must read on to find out about that day.), and Ken Knudtsen (My Monkey's Name Is Jennifer).

A man and his monkey: Ken Knudtsen and My Monkey's Name Is Jennifer
Throughout the con, Ken did a great job pitching his comic book to fans who stopped by to see Roman or Serena, whom he was seated between, as well as talking to his own fans, who increase in number with every issue of his book. Ken had everyone who helped out on My Monkey's Name Is Jennifer sign a copy of the first issue. I signed it "My Name Is Jennifer de Guzman." Check out issue four of MMNIJ for an accout of Comic-Con that is far more succinct (and humorous) than mine.

That night, SLG staffers hung out at the Hilton's pool and hot tub. It was the only time I got to see the pool, despite my grand ambitions to go swimming. We then ate pizza, the guys imbibed fermented bread juice (I don't like beer), and Dan educated us about the evils of government regulations on television sets. ("They're !*%#ing with your freedom, my friend!")
